 BTS Optician

This BTS enables students to practise the profession of optician-mutician. The optician-mutician is a qualified, independent health professional whose activity is regulated by Articles L.4362-1 et seq. of the Public Health Code and the relevant case law.

The spectacle optician is involved in the following areas: health, technology, communication and marketing, management.

He is able to:

  • perform vision analysis, establish the equipment formula
  • proceed with the necessary orders
  • prepare and check the equipment, (glasses or lenses)
  • proceed with tests, adapting the equipment carrying out routine repairs or having them carried out

He/she also has

  • communication skills (customer reception, dialogue with other specialists),
  • outfitting the sales outlet and management skills (preparing price lists, running the business, managing human resources..)

The course is organised into several skill modules, enabling step-by-step progression. It alternates between theoretical input, practical application and assessment sessions in order to promote practical and progressive learning.

BC01 – Geometric and Physical Optics

  • Analysis of problems in optics

BC02 - Technical study of optical systems

  • Analysis of optical and mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of components and materials
  • Validation of technical solutions

BC03 - Analysis of vision

  • Assessment of visual function
  • Identification of abnormalities and corrective measures
  • Interpretation of eye tests
  • Knowledge of the main eye conditions

BC04 - Eye tests, measurements and fitting

  • Conducting eye tests
  • Taking morphological measurements
  • Fitting optical equipment to the customer’s needs

BC05 - Equipment inspection and technical procedures

  • Inspection and assessment of optical equipment
  • Carrying out technical procedures in optics
  • Proposing suitable solutions

BC06 - Work experience

  • Presentation and promotion of professional activities
  • Oral and technical communication
  • Mastery of professional vocabulary

General education modules : Business economics and management; Mathematics; French; Modern foreign language

Throughout the course, learners receive personalised support with regular monitoring by the teaching team and progress reviews to tailor learning to each individual’s needs. A work placement also enables students to develop their professional skills in a real-world setting. Skills are assessed progressively through role-plays, practical exercises, professional projects and assessments carried out throughout the course. Our teaching methodology prioritises a practical, work-focused approach: case studies, role-plays, practical scenarios and collaborative activities enable learners to learn in conditions that closely resemble the real-world workplace.

Education Nationale certified teachers, Bac +3 trainers with significant experience in adult education, professional lecturers.


Assessments are organised throughout the course and at the end of the programme, in accordance with the qualification framework. Assessment tests may take the form of in-course assessments (CCF) and/or final examinations.

Support with exam preparation is provided throughout the course to help candidates succeed.

This qualification is awarded following validation by the academic examination board.

If a candidate fails the qualification, they retain credit for the modules they have passed and may retake the remaining examinations at a later date. The modules passed remain valid for 5 years
