The objectives of level 1 emergency care training are to acquire the knowledge to:
- identify a vital or potential emergency situation
- perform emergency procedures appropriate to the situation and take part in the response to an exceptional collective or health emergency
.The training is organised around 3 modules (Arrêté du 30 décembre 2014 relatif à l'attestation de formation Gestes et Soins d'urgence)
Module 1: Management of vital emergencies
- Identify a danger and implement appropriate protection
- Alert
- Identify unconsciousness and ensure freedom and protection of the airways
-. Identify cardiac arrest and perform basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation with equipment
- Identify acute airway obstruction and perform appropriate actions
- Stop external haemorrhage
Module 2: Management of potential emergencies
Identify the signs of seriousness of a malaise, bone or skin trauma and perform the appropriate actions
- Identify the signs of seriousness of a burn and act accordingly
- Apply the elementary rules of hygiene

Module 3: Collective emergencies and exceptional health situations
- Exceptional health situations: knowing how the health system response is organised (ORSAN scheme) and how it relates to the civil security response scheme (ORSEC scheme)
- To become part of the management plans for exceptional health situations in health or medico-social establishments, depending on the profession practised and the place of practice
The AFGSU level 1 is intended for non-healthcare professional staff working in a healthcare establishment, a medico-social structure or with a healthcare professional in a private practice, a nursing home or a health centre.
