Introduction to VAT and the Return Filing Procedure

Introduction to VAT

  • The basics of reporting obligations: definition and how VAT works (what is VAT, how is it collected and deducted)
  • The different types of VAT returns / Regimes: collected, deductible (definition, calculation and recording), payable or refundable (calculation of net VAT payable or recoverable)

VAT return deadlines

  • Payment arrangements: frequency of returns (monthly, quarterly, annually), payment methods (bank transfer, direct debit, cheque)
  • Adjustments: How to correct a VAT return, penalties and interest on late payment (consequences of late payment)

The VAT return procedure

  • Completing a VAT return: Online at impot.gouv, creating an account, entering information (completing the required fields (VAT collected, input VAT, VAT payable), validation and submission (checking the information and submitting the return)
  • Via EDI: what is EDI and how does it work, the EDI filing process.

Special considerations for specific transactions

  • Intra-Community VAT: definition, accounting treatment (recording of intra-Community transactions)
  • Imports: definition, accounting treatment (recording of import transactions)
  • Reporting obligations (DEB, DES): when and how to complete them

Tools and resources for managing VAT

  • VAT return software and platforms: overview of the main software packages (advantages and disadvantages), practical demonstration
  • Practical exercises and case studies:
  • Practical exercises: Simulation of VAT returns using different scenarios.
  • Case studies: Analysis of real or fictitious situations, identification of errors and corrections.

This course is aimed at directors of micro-enterprises and SMEs, business founders or buyers, operational managers, department heads, sales representatives or account managers, as well as any employee wishing to learn the basics of financial analysis.

It is also suitable for professionals who are not finance specialists but wish to better understand and interpret the company’s key financial documents (balance sheet, profit and loss account, key indicators).

It is primarily aimed at companies with fewer than 50 employees operating in sectors covered by AKTO. Funding is also available for companies with more than 50 employees. Please contact us.

  • Technical prerequisites:

Experience in an accounts or sales administration department. Basic knowledge of general accounting and familiarity with VAT principles. Some initial experience in handling accounting or administrative tasks relating to invoicing and VAT is recommended to ensure you can follow the training effectively
