The Level 3 Industrial Piping Welder vocational qualification is involved in the production of unit and/or small series, boilerwork and piping assemblies for various business sectors involving metalworking in piping and/or industrial boilerwork.

The aims of the course are:

  • To master the process of assembling pipes and pipe fittings by welding using the Coated Electrode Arc (CEA) and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) processes, in compliance with defined instructions and quality criteria
  • To acquire the skills associated with the different types of welding: Flat welding with the coated electrode arc and Tungsten Inert Gas processes of pipe assemblies / Welding in all positions with the coated electrode arc and Tungsten Inert Gas processes of pipe assemblies
  • Obtain the GIES 1 Certificate

The course is organised into several skill modules, allowing for step-by-step progression. It alternates between theoretical input, practical exercises and assessment sessions to promote hands-on, progressive learning.

BC01 – Welding flat pipe assemblies using the coated electrode and tungsten inert gas (TIG) processes

  • Welding flat pipe assemblies using the TIG process in single-pass and multi-pass configurations
  • Welding flat pipe assemblies using the TIG and Shielded Metal Arc Welding processes in multi-pass configurations
  • Check the quality of welds in accordance with current specifications
  • Repair defective flat welds on pipework components

BC02 - Weld pipe assemblies in all positions using the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) processes

  • Weld pipe components in all positions using the TIG process in single-pass and multi-pass operations
  • Weld pipework components in all positions using the TIG and Shielded Metal Arc Welding processes in multiple passes
  • Repair defective welds in all positions on pipework components

Throughout the course, trainees receive personalised support with regular monitoring by the teaching team and progress reviews to tailor the learning to each individual’s needs.

A work placement also enables participants to develop professional skills in a real-world setting.

Skills are assessed progressively through role-plays, practical exercises, professional projects and assessments carried out throughout the course.

Our teaching methodology prioritises a practical, work-focused approach: case studies, role-plays, practical scenarios and collaborative activities enable learning in conditions that closely resemble the real working world.

The job requires very good mental and physical conditions and the ability to be mobile. Welders work both in the workshop and on site, generally standing up, sometimes in difficult positions or using uncomfortable or even painful postures. Added to these conditions are the dangers associated with the environment, working at height or in excavations. They may have to travel a lot, and depending on how the company is organised, they may work regular day shifts or 2 x 8 or even 3 x 8 shifts. Applicants will therefore be offered specific entry tests (to check their physical and visual abilities).

The final examination takes place before a two-member examination panel comprising professionals from the sector. It comprises a professional role-play and an interview based on the professional portfolio (DP), which highlights the experience and skills developed by the candidate.

The final examination takes place within two months of the end of the training course.

The examination panel validates all or part of the Professional Qualification. In the event of partial validation, the professional competence certificates (CCP) (or competence modules) obtained are valid for a period of five years.

The candidate may subsequently complete the missing modules to obtain the Professional Qualification in its entirety.
