 Introduction to non-violent communication

Show all
Weekly start-up

At the end of the training course, the learner will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental principles and benefits of Nonviolent Communication.
  • Identify the four stages of the NVC process (Observation, Feeling, Need, Request).
  • Distinguish observation from judgements, and feelings from interpretations.
  • Apply the NVC process in simple communication situations.
  • Improve their ability to express themselves clearly and listen empathetically
.

1. Introduction to Nonviolent Communication

  • What is NVC? Definition, origins (Marshall Rosenberg), underlying philosophy.
  • The challenges of communication: common obstacles (judgements, interpretations, generalisations) and their consequences.
  • Benefits of NVC: Improved relationships, conflict resolution, better understanding of self and others.
  • The posture of listening and authenticity in NVC.

2. The 4 steps of the NVC process

  • Step 1: Observation (O)

Distinguish between concrete observation of facts and interpretation/judgement.

Practical exercise: recognising facts vs. judgements in given sentences.

  • Step 2: The Feeling (S)

Differentiating feelings (emotions) from thoughts or pseudo-feelings (what we think we feel, but which is a judgement).

Practical exercise: associate situations with specific feelings; distinguish "I feel betrayed" (judgement) from "I feel sad" (feeling).

  • Step 3: The Need (B)

Identify the universal unmet need(s) at the root of the feeling.

Examples of universal needs (recognition, security, respect, autonomy, connection...).

Practical exercise: Linking feelings and needs.

  • Step 4: The Demand (D)

Formulate a clear, concrete, achievable and negotiable demand.

Differentiating between a request and a requirement.

Practical exercise: transforming "reproaches" or "demands" into NVC requests.

  • Light situation scenarios: Applying the 4 steps to simple cases from professional life (e.g. a colleague who does not meet deadlines, a learner who monopolises the floor).

3. Practical application and Perspectives

  • Synthesis of the process : The 4 stages at a glance.
  • Application : How NVC can help in the roles of trainer and coordinator (feedback, group management, relationships with clients/learners).
  • Limits of NVC: It is not a "miracle recipe", but a demanding practice.
  • Additional resources: Books, websites, more in-depth training courses.
  • Questions/answers and sharing of participants' experiences.
