Acquire the theoretical and practical foundations to work in construction, fitting out and equipping functions within shipbuilding and ship and river repair companies, on ships made of wood or associated or synthetic materials.

The holder of the CAP works on the hull, decks, superstructures and interior fittings by implementing various construction systems. He installs a variety of technical equipment needed to manoeuvre the ship and to ensure safety and comfort on board.

In the course of his activities, the marine carpenter notes the characteristics and traces the constituent parts of a ship, carries out machining and shaping operations, carries out reinforcement lamination operations, carries out assembly and fitting operations, and carries out waterproofing, finishing and treatment operations.


The course is organised into several skill modules, enabling step-by-step progression. It alternates between theoretical input, practical exercises and assessment sessions to promote practical and progressive learning.

BC01 – Analysis of a professional situation

  • Identify and interpret technical documents
  • Record the characteristics of a vessel and/or part of a vessel
  • Interpret a technical solution
  • Draw up bills of quantities for materials and components
  • Complete manufacturing procedures for a component
  • Represent a technical solution graphically (sketches and working drawings)

BC02 - Production of a component or sub-assembly for a ship

  • Preparation and securing of the workstation
  • Preparation and inspection of materials
  • Carrying out manufacturing, assembly and lamination operations
  • Repair, finishing and treatment of structures
  • Equipment maintenance and site management
  • Communication and monitoring of activities

BC03 - Production of a technical drawing

  • Graphically representing a technical solution through technical sketches
  • Graphically representing a technical solution through professional technical drawings

BC04 - French and History – Geography – Moral and Civic Education

BC05 - Mathematics and Physics – Chemistry

BC06 - Physical Education and Sport

BC07 - Health, Environment and Prevention

  • Analysis of prevention scenarios, health and the environment
  • Implementation of preventative measures
  • Resolving issues relating to health, the environment and consumer affairs
  • Professional written and oral communication
  • Emergency management

Throughout the course, students receive personalised support with regular monitoring by the teaching team and progress reviews to tailor learning to each individual’s needs.

A work placement also enables learners to develop their professional skills in a real-world setting.

Skills are assessed progressively through role-plays, practical exercises, professional projects and assessments carried out throughout the course.

Our teaching methodology prioritises a practical, work-focused approach: case studies, role-plays, practical scenarios and collaborative activities enable learning in conditions that closely resemble the real working world.

Total maximum duration of 1,092 hours, including 490 hours in a company and 710 hours at the training centre.

Assessments are organised throughout the course and at the end of the programme, in accordance with the qualification framework. Assessment tests may take the form of in-course assessments (CCF) and/or final examinations.

Support with exam preparation is provided throughout the course to help candidates succeed.

This qualification is awarded following validation by the academic examination board.

If a candidate fails the qualification, they retain credit for the modules they have passed and may retake the remaining examinations at a later date. The modules passed remain valid for 5 years

It is possible, under certain conditions, to continue studies in 1 year with a certificate of specialisation ( ex mention complémentaire ou en 2 ans en bac professionnel ou en brevet professionnel (BP).
