The ASR is awarded after an examination covering theoretical knowledge. Registration is done at a GRETA-CFA or GRETA.
If you were born in 1988 or later and do not have the ASSR, you must hold the ASR which allows you to validate the theoretical part of the BSR (category AM of the driving licence). The ASR is compulsory to pass the practical training of the BSR.
For people aged under 21 : before registering, it is imperative to check that you do not already hold the ASSR 1 or 2: the ASSR 1 is taken in class 5ème, the ASSR 2 is taken in class 3ème.
People who have passed the ASSR 1 or 2 during their schooling can produce a sworn certificate of passing, stating the surname, first name, date of birth and contact details of the school that issued it.
For people born before 1 January 1988 : they may drive a moped without holding the BSR (category AM of the driving licence) and register for the driving licence without ASSR or ASR to withdraw the driving licence.
The number of places per year is determined by the Prefecture of the département. Applications are processed in the order in which they are submitted, depending on the places available.
The ASR is a test in the form of a 20-question multiple-choice questionnaire covering theoretical knowledge of road safety rules. The ASR is issued to people who obtain at least 10/20 in this test. The questions are designed to check that the candidate knows the basic rules of road safety. In the event of failure, the candidate may reapply for another session subject to availability.
